The project team is intentionally making space for conversation regarding the signifiers that were used against marginalized communities. The racial slur used in the name for the Tea Room in this photograph is indicative of a large Depression Era fad for Tea Rooms across the nation which exoticized and fetishized mysticism and fortune telling. Many states simultaneously had laws banning payment in exchange for tea leaf reading and fortune telling in attempt to oppress Roma people, those with cultural ties to the profession. A primary theme of Reunion speaks to oppression and solidarity in the face of power. We hope that discussion makes way for solidarity and momentum to change.
